Allergan eye drug wins EU approval

ALLERGAN EYE DRUG WINS EU APPROVAL

Allergan on Wednesday said that its drug Ozurdex has become the first drug in Europe approved to treat an eyesight-endangering condition in which fluid builds up in the retina because of a clogged vein, Reuters reports.

Ozurdex is an injected implant which contains a biodegradable form of the corticosteroid dexamethasone. The steroid is designed to be slowly released, and control fluid build-up and reduce inflammation around the clogged retinal vein.

According to Allergan's website, Ozurdex was approved in the US in 1958 for the condition. It notes that use of coricosteroids can increase the risk of glaucoma and eye infections.
